Marilyn Monroe Bandana Print Skirt Set

I love this outfit, its a great combination of sexy pinup style with a more casual everyday style, something that would be easier to work into your wardrobe than some of the other styles Marilyn is better known for.

Black Top with low cut front, X back with rhinestone trim, low scoop back button closure, bra cups sewn inside, elastic along top edge of bodice.

Super full red white and black paisley bandana print cotton with 3 tire ruffled trimmed with matching black piping, back zip with button. This sample outfit shown above is available at
Psychedelic Pinup on Etsy

Styled after a lesser known outfit worn by Marilyn Monroe during a photoshoot with Philippe Halsman in 1954. See original images below:

Marilyn Monroe's Jersey Knit Wiggle Dresses- AKA The Pucci Shift

This dress like many others I make through my Etsy shop Morningstar Pinup or my website MorningstarPinup.com was originally a custom request, based on the many jersey knit shift dresses and tops owned by Marilyn Monroe and designed by Pucci in the early 1960s, that made it into my regular style line.
I know I have shared the customer photo of the green dress before but never got around to doing a post about the dress and the many, many colors Marilyn owned. The fabric would have been a silk jersey knit, which is something I can order but there are fewer colors to choose from and the synthetic jersey that i use is a bit more user and budget friendly, it can be machine washed (though i recommend hand washing to prevent picks to the fabric) and there are a lot of colors options at the moment.
As you can see I've made a number of them. Its a very basic shape and no darts with the exception of the nude shift (you can see below the actual dress from the auction photos laying out flat with the belt) it has front and back darts as well as side bust darts. All the other dresses and tops do not have any darts as far as i can tell.
Some of the original belts feature beaded tassel ends, though mine do not. The most complicated part is working with such a stretchy fabric, the pattern has to be sized down to account for the amount of stretch widthwise and every seam carefully sewn to avoid popped seams :-)

In Purple, shown along side an image of Marilyn wearing the top in a similar shade.
Below a colorized image of Marilyn wearing the dress in Pink without the tie belt.

And a few more pictures of Marilyn and her many Pucci shift dresses, i love the multi colored one below. The last image is just a selection of some of Marilyn's Pucci collection.

Love Goes Wrong Skirt Suit - Marilyn Monroe

The  "When Love Goes Wrong'' Skirt Suit! I was pretty excited to get to make this suit again, I worked out some of the earlier kinks and added some more support to the collar to give it that wonderful curve. I used a stretch suiting in a lovely charcoal grey and its fully lined in stretch satin with some serious shoulder and bust structure that I hadn't done before but i think was worth it.  I also changed the hidden closure making it more secure. Marilyn Monroe Life Dress

This was a custom request dress, styled after the Ceil Chapman dress Marilyn Monroe wore on the cover of Life Magazine. The base is a stretch satin with bra cups, side zipper, the over fabric is a white knit fabric gathered and draped with a side slit. 3/4 Sleeves also gathered. The Original dress was meant to be worn on the shoulders but of course Marilyn wore them pushed off for a sexier look, this dress can also be worn either way :-)

Niagara Dress in Polkadots

It's not often that i get to make the same dress several times each in a different fabric or print. I must say that i love this Niagara dress design even more in dots than the solid pink that i usually use. Though maybe its just because its something different. Its a classic Marilyn Monroe dress that just screams 50s but is still very wearable today. All of these are cotton prints, the black with small red dots is a stretch poplin, the others are non-stretch. All have built in foam cups and faux button fronts with an invisible zipper up the back. My fave is the red with black dots below ;-)
